  1. Samantha Cliffe website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Samantha Cliffe

Samantha recently returned from her travels with a stunning portfolio of shots from Mongolia, Vietnam, and China; some photographic gems to accompany her already-impressive collection. She needed a new website to showcase these photographs: something simple, minimal, but with a hint of atmosphere. She also needed it to be easily updatable via WordPress and Flickr. You can view my full write-up of the site here.

  2. Mithun illustration

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Blue Flavor

Poster to accompany work for Seatlle-based architects Mithun. Blue Flavor have taken a fresh approach to the way they display their client portfolio, and commissioned me to create this illustration. There’s a more detailed explanation on the Blue Flavor site. Each poster is printed at A3 size and mounted on the company’s walls in their Seattle office.

  3. Ozbod website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Ozbod

Bespoke furniture makers Ozbod approached me to design and build a new site. Their existing one was extremely basic but did a decent job with its simple navigation system, so I created something with a similar level of simplicity. Keeping the gallery as the main focus of the site, Javascript-powered previous / next arrow allow the user to quickly browse through Ozbod’s impressive portfolio without leaving the page. The entire site is powered by WordPress.

  4. Rhys Marsh album CD packaging

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Better Place Recordings

Utilising the beautiful photography of Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland, this 6-panel Digipak presents the debut album from Rhys Marsh and the Autumn Ghost: the quite stunning The Fragile State Of Inbetween, the first physical release from Norway-based Better Place Recordings.

  5. Rhys Marsh poster

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Better Place Recordings

To celebrate the release of the album, Rhys played an intimate ‘releasekonsert’ and a poster was required to advertise the occasion. Drawing on the design of the CD packaging itself and the inspiration of Scandinavian sparseness, I designed this A3 poster.

  6. Blue Flavor illustration

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Blue Flavor

  8. Justin Worrall logo

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Justin Worrall

Entrepreneur Justin Worrall needed a simple but bold logo to brand his online properties, so I took the wonderful typeface Fontin Sans as a base and then modified it to form a unique and striking identity.

  9. Justin Worrall website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Justin Worrall

Drawing on inspiration from Soviet propaganda art - of which Justin is so fond - I created this personal site for him and his umbrella brand.

  10. Better Place Recordings logo

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Better Place Recordings

Norway-based record label Better Place Recordings needed a logo with simplicity and space. The text is simply a widely-spaced Fontin , while the graphic is a bespoke shape intended to reference the Eastern influence of the label’s music and the letters b-p-r.

  11. Better Place Recordings sampler cover

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Better Place Recordings

The debut release from the label was a free, download-only sampler. I created the accompanying PDF with the digital artwork, incorporating photography by Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland.

  12. AOBK: Vantage CD packaging

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Sound Devastation Records

Based around an illustration by Danica Novgorodoff and her original layout ideas, I designed this gatefold CD packaging to house ‘Vantage’, the third release from Analysis of Bison Kills

  13. AOBK: Vantage vinyl packaging

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Sound Devastation Records

For the vinyl release of ‘Vantage’, Analysis of Bison Kills decided to opt for complete different packaging and commissioned new illustrations from Jon proctor. I then took his artwork and layout ideas and designed this neat vinyl slipcase.

  14. Clockwork illustration

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Blue Flavor

Poster to accompany work for Clockwork (now Playbook). Blue Flavor have taken a fresh approach to the way they display their client portfolio, and commissioned me to create this illustration. 16. Edenbee consultancy

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Edenbee

Edenbee approached me to do some consultancy work on their website, asking for an evaluation of the current site and some suggestions as to how it could be improved. After discussing the project with the team, I spent several hours recording my thoughts on the site and produced an extensive PDF. This was then used by the company to commission new work.

  17. FreeAgent Central invoice template

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : FreeAgent Central

In order to spice up the designs of their invoice templates, FreeAgent Central asked me create a new one - essentially just a new CSS file - and now users are able to automatically create invoices from this new template.

  18. Holiday Site Builder website template

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Holiday Site Builder

Holiday Site Builder provides owners of holiday homes to build their own website using an extremely simple and intuitive system based on templates. The company approached me to design a new template: I handed over a PSD containing around 6 variations, and the in-house team coded them up for integration into the application.

    LIVE : holidaysitebuilder.com/styles.php

  19. Proudfolio WordPress theme

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : WooThemes

WooThemes sell premium WordPress themes or a very high quality for a very reasonable price. When they contacted me and asked if I’d like to collaborate, I jumped at the chance and we produced ProudFolio, with me handling the design and HTML / CSS, and Adii looking after the WordPress dev.

  20. Proof HQ consultancy

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Proof HQ

Proof HQ approached me to do some consultancy work on their website, asking for an evaluation of the current site and some suggestions as to how it could be improved. After discussing the project with the team, I spent several hours recording my thoughts on the site and produced an extensive PDF. This was then used by the company to commission new work.

  21. We Decided consultancy

  22. Webcredible icons

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Webcredible

Creating visually rich iconography was an important part of my task in redesigning the Webcredible site. Delivered at various sizes, these icons are ready to be used throughout the site and give a clear indication of each section.

  23. Webcredible website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Webcredible

With Webcredible’s in-house team handling the code, I was contacted to create some Photoshop-only designs for a new website, aiming to bring a sense of fun and a modern touch to one of England’s leading user experience agencies.

    COMING SOON

  24. Twiistup website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Twiistup

Twiistup connects people from technology, media and entertainment. Held at great party locations in L.A., Twiistup needed a fun, energetic site to promote their events. The site is powered by Wordpress, so the event organisers can update the content with ease.

    LIVE : twiistup.com

  25. Fuel Conference website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

Carsonified’s latest event - this time aimed specifically at web businesses required a clean, simple site in contrast to FOWA, FOWD, etc. I also created the brand identity.

    LIVE : fuel-conference.com

  26. Future of Web Apps website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

With each FOWA event breaking off into its own site, Carsonified needed a hub to act as the home page at the root of the domain. More minimal than the individual sites, the FOWA home page introduces people to what the event is and provides a general overview of the brand.

    LIVE : futureofwebapps.com

  27. Analysis of Bison Kills website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Analysis of Bison Kills

The underground metal band Analysis of Bison Kills returned to me to build upon the success of their previous site. This time, they were after a Standards-based site that they could update with ease, so I designed and developed a Wordpress-powered site where the content largely sites on one page, allowing the user to easily access all of their music, news, and photos from one place.

    LIVE : analysisofbisonkills.co.uk

  28. Hugs website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

The Hugs website was designing and built in under a day, so please forgive the lack of polish and the poor rendering in IE. It was created to promote the Hugs (an exclusive line of hand-made MacBook Pro and iPhone covers) we made during the Carsonified ideas week.

    LIVE : hugmymac.com

  29. Hugs logo

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

In just four days - for the Carsonified ideas week - we thought up, created, and marketed a brand new product: an exclusive line of hand-made MacBook Pro and iPhone covers. I was tasked with creating the identity and website for the range; here’s the logo.

  30. Future of Web Apps Miami website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

I’m gradually going through the process of redesigning all of the sites run by Carsonified, and FOWA was the first of the ‘events’ sites to get tackled. Specifically themed around Miami - the conference’s location - the site was designed to be colourful and fun while still addressing issues the company had with the previous sites’ incarnations.

  31. Create a subversive design website & tutorial

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : .net magazine

I wrote a tutorial and created the accompanying website for issue 170 of .net magazine, which is published as Practical Web Design outside the UK. This one kind of tied in with my desire to destroy design clichés, and readers were shown how to achieve a glitched / malfunctioning look.

    LIVE : clients.elliotjaystocks.com/dot_net/0170/site

  32. Future of Web Design pass badges

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

Another one of my tasks upon joining the company was to redesign the pass badges for the events. Each ‘person type’ (i.e: designer, developer, founder, press, etc.) gets a different colour.

Photos courtesy of Jim Renaud and Krystyn Heide, by the way.

  33. Carsonified business cards

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

I’m still working on some ‘proper’ business cards, but we needed some temporary ones to give away at FOWA in October 2007, which was right after we completed the rebrand. As it turns out, these cards have actually proved quite popular!

  34. Carsonified website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

Carsonified.com, in its previous state, was simply Ryan Carson’s blog. But with Carson Systems now rebranded as Carsonified, the site had to change. I completely redesigned it, although the blog still remains the focus. This is something of an ongoing project, as - at time of writing - I don’t feel that it’s as ‘complete’ as it should be.

    LIVE : carsonified.com

  35. Discover the art of grunge website & tutorial

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : .net magazine

I wrote a tutorial and created the accompanying website for issue 169 of .net magazine, which is published as Practical Web Design outside the UK. This issue dealt with the so-called ‘Grunge’ aesthetic (a label I’m not comfortable with and a title not written by me) and showed readers how to create a website using the background image from the previous tutorial and a host of new elements.

    LIVE : clients.elliotjaystocks.com/dot_net/0169/site

  36. Carsonified mailer template mailer

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

With the company rebrand complete, a generic HTML mailer template was needed, so I cooked up this one in time for the Future of Mobile event. Ignore the kitties - they’re just placeholders. Actually, don’t ignore the kitties! How could you even think of such a thing?!?

    LIVE : carsonified.com/mailers/fom/20071010/newsletter.html

  37. Carson Systems redirect page

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

Once we rebranded the company to Carsonified, I put up this basic redirect page on the old Carson Systems URL. Pretty straightforward, really, but I do have a strange fondness for redirect / holding pages.

    LIVE : carsonsystems.com

  38. Carsonified logo

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carsonified

I was responsible for rebranding the company and the logo design was - obviously - a large part of that task. To see how we reached this stage, check out the Carsonified rebranding saga: a collection of blog entries, videos and sketches I uploaded during the process.

  39. Create a textured background tutorial

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : .net magazine

I wrote a tutorial and created the accompanying website for issue 168 of .net magazine, which is published as Practical Web Design outside the UK. This tutorial showed readers how to create a background in a similar style to the one found on this very site, using some carefully-selected imagery, some custom brushes, and a little Photoshop fairy dust.

    LIVE : clients.elliotjaystocks.com/dot_net/0168/site

  40. Future of Mobile print advert

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Carson Systems / .net magazine

As the FOWA advert never saw the light of day in the end, we took out another ad for Future of Mobile and I designed it in the same style as the lost ad. I think this one ran, but I forget in which issue.

  41. FOWA Road Trip microsite

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carson Systems

To promote the forthcoming Future of Web Apps event and get closer to the community, Ryan decided to organise a ‘Road Trip’: a series of small, informal, pub-based meet-ups across some of the major cities in Europe. I designed and built this one-page site for the trip, which allowed Ryan to update his journey’s progress along the way with just a couple of simple class name changes. Check out the seamless background repeating in this screengrab!

    LIVE : futureofwebapps.com/roadtrip

  42. FOWA Expo print advert

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Carson Systems / .net magazine

We took out a full-page ad in .net magazine to promote the Future of Web Apps, drawing particular attention on the expo part of the event. I designed this and it will appear in issue 168 sadly never appeared in the issue because of of a hiccup at .net. This was an exciting project, as it was my first bit of print design in a very long time!

  43. FOWD Workshops microsite

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Carson Systems

One of my first pieces of design work for Carson Systems was the redesign of the ‘workshops’ page on the Future of Web Design site (later ported over to Future of Web Apps as well). The page uses a Javascript-powered tabbed navigation system to give users instant access to the information. A non-JS version of the nav is automatically provided for users with JS turned off.

    LIVE : futureofwebdesign.com/workshops.html

  44. SAFN website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Armstrong Winston

Something of a unique one, this. It’s the only project to date where I’ve taken the role of front-end developer (i.e: writing the XHTML and CSS) and not had any involvement with the design (which was handled by Chris Armstrong, the client).

    LIVE : nutritionalanthro.org

  45. Transatlantic Records website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Transatlantic / Sanctuary

Just prior to leaving Sanctuary, my last task was to design and build a website for the newly resurrected label Transatlantic. Unfortunately, after I left the company, no-one added the content, and a month later the company was bought by Universal, thus killing the project altogether. A great shame, that - there was some very cool Wordpress customisation in there!

    OFFLINE

  46. The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Apple Corps.

Francis and I were commissioned by Apple Corps. to create a website that celebrated the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was an intense project - in order to hit the anniversary date, it was designed & built entirely over 5 consecutive nights - but the end result is something everyone was happy with. Francis took the lead with the design, by the way.

    LIVE : beatles.com/sgtpepper

  47. Rhys Marsh website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Rhys Marsh

In these days of MySpace, Rhys and I decided there was little point in creating a site that simply duplicated the content on his MySpace page, so I created a simple, elegant holding page with links to his various projects. The imagery was created in Photoshop by using scans of photographs Rhys had taken on his Holga camera. Logo by Francis.

    LIVE : rhysmarsh.com

  48. The Alchemyst microsite

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Random House / Sanctuary

Random House Publishing wanted a UK gateway to the main (US-centric) Alchemyst site, so I created this to entice readers in. The cover imagery and magical theme of the book is featured prominently in the Flash-based part of the page, while an HTML-based sign-up allows users to register for updates.

    LIVE : thealchemyst.co.uk

  49. Nextmen ad banners

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Nextmen / Sanctuary

I was asked to create two Flash ad banners for the Nextmen, using the excellent album and single artwork by Alex Young. As this was the only brief, I decided to have fun and create some light-hearted animations that took small details of the illustrations and elaborated upon the characters.

    LIVE : sanctuarynewmedia.com/banners/nextmen

  50. Tiny Dancers mailer template

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Parlophone Records / EMI

Using artwork assets created by the band, I created this playful, home-made looking mailer template for Parlophone. As with the templates I made in the past when I worked at EMI, this was designed to be integrated into the company’s internal publishing system, allowing label staff to update the text content themselves. Built with mailer-friendly XHTML & CSS!

    LIVE : sanctuarynewmedia.com/mailers/emi/tinydancers-template

  51. Platinum Travel website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Platinum Travel / Sanctuary

I’m becoming rather fond of concise, one-page sites. This one for Platinum Travel (an entertainment travel company owned by the Sanctuary Group) was built - as always - with the most strict web standards, but a little drop of Flash was used to retain a sense of movement on an otherwise static site.

    LIVE : platinumtravelint.com

  52. Trojan Records website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Trojan Records / Sanctuary

A complete overhaul of the Trojan website and brand identity, launched to tie in with the label’s 40th anniversary. The site build included a custom skin of MPP’s e-commerce system. Design, markup & CSS by me; PHP & MySQL integration by the other Sanctuary New Media boys.

    LIVE : trojanrecords.com

  53. Trojan Radio audio player

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Trojan Records / Sanctuary

Sitting alongside the Trojan Records site in the form of an optional pop-up is the ‘Trojan Radio’ a little Flash-based audio player designed by me and coded by Marc.

    LIVE : trojanrecords.com/TrojanRadio

  54. Sourhaze website (v7)

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : n/a (self-initiated project)

The latest and most succinct version of sourhaze.com: a one-page, scroll-tastic site with a focus on keeping things simple without farting around. A little bit of Flash in the form of the open-source XSPF player neatly keeps the primary focus on the most important thing: the music.

    LIVE : sourhaze.com

  55. Sanctuary New Media website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Sanctuary New Media / Sanctuary

After being at Sanctuary for a few months, I wanted to give our team some visibility on the ’net outside of the Sanctuary Group site, so I put together this little portfolio of Sanctuary New Media’s work (although everything prior to Trojan was done before my time, I should note).

    LIVE : sanctuarynewmedia.com

  56. Phillip Neil Martin website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Phillip Neil Martin

The award-winning composer Phillip Neil Martin contacted me after my work with the London Kensington Sinfonia, and after almost a year of development, we’ve unveiled this huge Flash-based site, which was designed & developed by me with additional Actionscript by Marc and Francis.

  57. The Cooper Temple Clause mailer & banner

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Sanctuary

I designed two HTML-based e-mails that were sent out to the thousands of names on The Cooper Temple Clause’s mailing list, and an animated banner for users to place on their MySpace profiles.

  58. Samantha Cliffe website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Samantha Cliffe

Samantha Cliffe is an extremely talented photographer whose work focuses on nature, decaying architecture, and a feeling of nostalgia. I designed & built her a site that showcases the photography using the ‘Lightbox’ script written by Lokesh Dhankar.

  59. Sourhaze: Second Leaf CD packaging

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : n/a (self-initiated project)

After I finished recording & mixing the album, I set about creating the artwork to ‘Second Leaf’ and spent two days out in the countryside; one taking (and then manipulating) photographs of trees; and the other pulling them together into the design. Back in London, and with the typography almost sorted, Francis lent a helping hand and added some InDesign shine before exporting the print-ready PDFs.

  60. Massive Attack: Collected website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Virgin Records / EMI

Working closely with one of my favourite bands (a dream of mine and a serious goal since I joined EMI), I created this microsite to promote their ‘best of’ album ‘Collected’. Each week before release, a new section was launched, each one themed in style and content to a particular album. There are downloads a-plenty here, along with a massive (chuckle, chuckle) audio player and some cool Flash video.

  61. Seth Lakeman audio player

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Relentless Records / EMI

After the positive response from our Union Of Knives audio player (see below), Marc and I were commissioned to design & build one for upcoming folk artist Seth Lakeman (with me on design duties and Marc on Actionscript). Unfortunately, Seth’s album artwork was changed at the eleventh hour, and due to a lack of resources, our (unfinished) player never saw the light of day.

  62. Union Of Knives audio player

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Relentless Records / EMI

Following on from the success of the Union Of Knives promotional e-card (see below), I was asked to build an audio player along similar lines. This request came in at exactly the time I met Marc and this became our first project together. I designed it and Marc handled the maths-tastic Actionscript.

  64. Mandala: Eventyr CD cover

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Mandala

In late 2006, Mandala were on the verge of releasing ‘Eventyr’ - their most accomplished album yet - and Francis & I set to work on ideas for the album’s artwork. Then, just as we got going, the band split up, therefore forcing us to shelve the Eventyr ideas. Fortunately, Rhys Marsh And The Autumn Ghost arose from Mandala’s ashes, and our design relationship continues!

  65. Unmade logo

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : EMI Records / EMI

Eric Winbolt’s Unmade project was designed to be a system that made audio / visual assets available to the public for them to remix and reinterpret, and I was asked to design an icon-like logo to convey these ideas. The logo had to be simple and suggest the remix concept without alluding to any particular medium or fall into the trap of looking like the recycling logo.

  66. Mandala poster / flyer

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Mandala

Mandala’s headlining show at the Bedford Globe Theatre required a dramatic, eye-catching poster / flyer to publicise the night, and I was once again asked by the band to continue my role as semi-official graphic designer.

  67. The Divine Comedy website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Parlophone Records / EMI

Did you know The Divine Comedy (a.k.a. Neil Hannon) wrote the theme tune to Father Ted? It’s true! The Divine Comedy also happen to be a fairly decent band, and when I was asked to redesign their very dated website, I got the chance to scan Neil’s very own copy of the book / poem and use it for the site’s main inspiration and imagery

  68. Sourhaze website (v6)

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : n/a (self-initiated project)

Version 6 of sourhaze.com was the first to make a conscious departure from the all-Flash sites that had populated the site in the past, and also the first to adopt a one-page-only approach.

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : CliffeCo / Mornflake Oats

My former employers CliffeCo asked me to lend my illustration skills to a cereal packaging idea they were developing for Mornflake Oats. Unfortunately, the character was dropped, so my sexy little squirrel never saw the light of day.

  70. EMI Incentive website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : EMI

B2B site for Incentive, the department of EMI that deals with licensing music to third parties such as retailers. Neat, simple, and standards-compliant, this was designed and built by me with some Actionscript magic by Paul to get the image scrollers working.

  72. Mandala website (v3)

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Mandala

After the stark red-on-white look of version 2, the third and final incarnation of withinMandala.com reverted back to the darkness. As with the previous version, Francis took the lead, but we both collaborated during the Photoshop stage to jointly design this little piece of history.

  73. Beth Orton website

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : EMI Records / EMI

I was specially requested to build this new site for former ‘comedown queen’ Beth Orton, and it uses some simple Javascript to write content to the page dynamically (in a similar way to the Richard Ashcroft site below, although this way stops the whole page from refreshing). Luckily - for everyone’s sake - I was asked to have the player switched off by default. Thank god.

  74. Joker’s Pack website

    Project screenshot

    CLIENT : Joker’s Pack

Joker’s Pack is a film collective founded and run by my good friend Mark J Blackman. Mark and I are regular collaborators and although my involvement with the ’Pack started with conceptual illustrations for production proposals, my main contributions have been in the form of two film soundtracks and this website.

  75. Richard Ashcroft website (v2)

    Project screenshot

CLIENT : Parlophone Records / EMI

Well I liked my neat little boxes (see version 1, below), but apparently Richard changed his mind about his preferred aesthetic and requested a new site to be built. I once again handled the design, but due to time constraints, the markup & CSS was outsourced to Dan M T Slatter of Hype Multimedia, with me project-managing.

Does this look familiar to you? Ok, I admit - this is the second time this site has appeared in the portfolio, but I thought to draw attention to the fact that the excellent metal band Tear Gas And Plate Glass have now changed their name to Analysis Of Bison Kills. This is where it all began. Actually, that’s not true, but this seems like a good starting point. I released my debut album ‘Bathed In Blue’ in 2001, just about the same time as I discovered computer-aided design (and design on the whole, in fact; prior to this, my focus had been on illustration). I created the packaging for the album and then went on to attempt a website. The rest, as they say, is history...
