I’m speaking at Future Of Web Design, New York

Article illustration for a week in books

I’m very very pleased to announce that I’ll be speaking at FOWD New York on 7th November. I’ll be sharing the stage with such web design superstars as Jeffrey Zeldman, Andy Clarke, Khoi Vinh, Jonathan Snook, Ryan Sims, Joshua Davis, Jina Bolton, Ryan Singer, Bryan Veloso, Josh Williams, and more.

I’ll be hosting a talk called ‘Destroy The Web 2.0 Look’ and I’m taking no prisoners! Reflected logos, gradients, diagonal lines, luminous colours… I’m a comin’ to get ya!

The tickets for the event are only $195, so if you can get to New York, please come along. Although I’m completely biased, I personally think that this is one of the very best web design events of the year, and I can’t wait to meet everyone who’s going.

Good call, I am getting a little sick of the diagnal lines and reflected logos as well. I don’t know what started that hype, but it sucks. I don’t mind gradients all that much as long as they are not too distracting.

Congratulations and best of luck, dude!

It’s a pity I can’t make the talk. Just got back from AEA: San Fran and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m curious what the structure of your presentation will be about. Are you simple anti-2.0 or do you think that one can temper some of the “modern” flairs in web design with some good common sense.

I lean towards the latter. A little reflection isn’t necessarilly evil. As anything, design elements are best used in moderation.

Any chance you’ll be posting your slides?
Also, are you explicit in your slides or do you more minimalist?

I am going to see if I can make this Elliot. I have never been to New York, and with the new job I have money! I think I will ask my boss about taking a few days off in November.

If not then I will definitely be at SXSW.

Cheers for the comments guys. The encouragment is much appreciated!

@ Michael: I don’t want to give too much away just yet (especially as the presentation is still in its early stages), but basically I’m going to be attacking web design cliches. I agree with you that “as anything, design elements are best used in moderation” so I’m going to suggest how to not conform to the current trend. My main gripe is that people keep refering to ‘the Web 2.0 look’, which in my opinion does not exist: Web 2.0 is a concept – one relating almost exclusively to development – and not a design aesthetic.

And yes, I’ll be posting my slides; which reminds me: I still ned to do that for my previous talks. Sorry!

@Elliot: Sounds great. Looking forward to what you post. I completely agree that Web 2.0 is more of a development concept in some aspects. I also see it as more of a trend towards real business and real applications online. It’s the gold everyone was looking for in the great rush that was the dot-com era.

I do think that it’s OK to refer to the gradient-stripes-reflection thing as the “web 2.0” look, if only because everyone knows what you mean when you say it. I don’t think that’s what you’re referring to though so I’ll refrain from getting bogged down into the semantics of it.

    Good luck at the con.

Congratulations Elliot! I’m a “design professional/design student” and yet I paid the $200 (he who waits). So I missed the $50 special, but I still think it’s a phenomenal price.

I can’t wait to meet all of my heroes in web design. To be quite honest, you are actually among them. Answer my request for meeting, Elliot; be a pal!

    hehe.

    Break a leg!

It wasn’t mentioned in your list—perhaps it was suggested by the ellipsis—but could you kick a few rounded corners in while you’re at it? ;)

    Hi Elliot,

What company are you working for currently? I need a good web development company located in NY. So far I’ve been only suggested:
